The ProtoZones 2020–2025 program is based on an artistic-curatorial score:

The format we work with at Shedhalle is called ProtoZone.

A ProtoZone is an exhibition format for process-based art.

Each ProtoZone has Hi- and Lo-Intensity phases.

These terms were invented to spark ideas and actions, to be re-interpreted again and again. The ProtoZones became what artists, curators and visitors made of them – always in relation to the surroundings, rooted in space and time. In Hi-Intensity phases, the focus lies on gatherings of audience and artists. We meet in various ways and learn from the practices and processes involved in making art works. In Lo-Intensity phases, visitors explore a ProtoZone according to their own timing. ProtoZone20: Unending reflects on the collaborative aspects of this practice of exhibition-making.

At its center is Sunfast, a project by London based collective Assemble, originating in their shared studio at Leaside Yard. It is a site of collaboration, experimentation, and collective making – and a spacious bright yard with at times abundant sunlight. Inspired by Lughnasad, the pagan festival of the sun, this process of making results in large cyanotype curtains where sunlight itself imprints time and place onto fabric. Suspended in the architecture of Shedhalle alongside a film on the process, Sunfast creates a space of labor, light and ongoing encounter.

Each weekend in September, this space by Assemble hosts performances and interventions by artists with histories to the last five years at Shedhalle. They engage directly with the proposed scenario and the visitors. (Please find details in the “Program” section.)

Friday 05.09. open 18-22h

18h – participative live-performance with Assemble – Please bring an object as a sun-offering!

19h – Teresa Vittucci’s Retach – a small choreography of parting explores the embodiment of holding through the gesture of the hug. It performatively activates the space, including audience.

20h – JP Raether and the curatorial team then invite everyone to join into a reading circle around a collaborative text by aLifveforms – a herd of constructed and constantly evolving entities.

Long Night of the Museums

The collaborative project River Oracle activates the cyanotype landscape with an overnight program of live and recorded sounds, oracle practices and an installation of their own series of works co-created by sun and water.

SCHULE DER LIEBENDEN (SCHOOL OF LOVERS), another collaborative endeavour, also returns to Shedhalle. This time, the performers from Theater HORA invite visitors to a live-consultation-hour with the teachers of SCHULE DER LIEBENDEN.

Autumn Knight explores the sweetness and desolation of nothingness through an engagement with the space and audience with her improvisational solo performance NOTHING#20: a bluff (protozone).
